Study questions

For personal study, families, and community groups this week.

  1. Read Isaiah 56:1-8.
  2. The Bible makes clear that we are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. Does it then matter how we live? Some say it does not; this is known as antinomianism. What is antinomianism?
  3. In verses 1 and 2 we see that God's grace calls us to godly living: to keep justice and do righteousness. What is justice, and how do we keep it?
  4. What is righteousness? What is the difference between positional and practical righteousness?
  5. In verse 2 the Lord points to the need to keep the Sabbath. In principle, what is the Sabbath?
  6. What is the origin of the Sabbath? Why was the day we observe it changed under the New Covenant?
  7. Because of the work of the Servant (chapter 53), the Lord now welcomes outcasts to Himself (verses 3 to 8). What did the Servant of the Lord, Jesus Christ, do to accomplish this? See Ephesians 2:11-16.
  8. God welcomes all to Himself because of the work of Christ, and He requires those who come to Him to keep His commandments. Why does He require obedience if our obedience has nothing to do with our salvation?
  9. What practical application can you make from this text and sermon?
  10. Pray!
